A Historic Belmont Heights Remodel
This historic Belmont Heights home in Long Beach has been part of our lives for well over a decade. Over the years, we have had the privilege of returning to the home time and again, thoughtfully evolving the interiors while carefully honoring the incredible architectural character that makes it so special.
The home is filled with original Spanish Revival details that immediately capture your attention, including a stunning Batchelder fireplace, curved leaded glass windows, hexagon terracotta tile, and narrow oak plank flooring throughout. These historic elements created such a beautiful foundation for the design and are a large part of why we love working on Spanish-style homes so much. From the beginning, the home carried an unmistakable sense of warmth, craftsmanship, and timelessness.
Our approach throughout this Belmont Heights remodel was to thoughtfully layer modern elements into the interiors while preserving the soul of the original architecture. Crisp white walls created a clean backdrop for more contemporary finishes and furnishings while still feeling entirely cohesive within the Spanish character of the home. One of the beautiful qualities of Spanish Revival design is how naturally it allows old and new to coexist.
The kitchen remodel became a bold and sophisticated centerpiece within the home, featuring black custom cabinetry, a large built-in refrigerator, dual sinks for prep and cleanup, and a dual-fuel range designed for both entertaining and everyday functionality. Rich material layering throughout the space helped the kitchen feel elevated while still deeply connected to the home’s original character.
Upstairs, the layout was significantly reconfigured to better support modern family living. The primary bathroom remodel now features an expansive wet room with a generous shower and soaking tub, creating a spa-like retreat within the home. Even the laundry room was thoughtfully elevated with richly veined marble countertops and distinctive wall tile, transforming an everyday utility space into something unexpectedly beautiful.
While many areas of the home evolved toward a more modern aesthetic, we intentionally preserved one of the upstairs bathrooms in a more traditional Spanish Revival style, complete with a pedestal sink and patterned revival tile that feels authentic to the home’s history.
Projects like this are especially rewarding because they allow us to blend so many of the elements we love most beneath one roof historic architecture, layered materials, modern functionality, and deeply personal design choices. This Belmont Heights home is a beautiful example of how timeless spaces can continue evolving while still honoring where they began.
