A Layered California Family Home

Years ago, we first worked on this Long Beach home when the clients’ children were still young. Returning years later, now with teenagers in the house, brought an entirely new perspective to the design process. It was incredibly rewarding to revisit the home alongside the family as their routines, lifestyles, and needs had naturally evolved over time.

During our first renovation together, we added a primary suite and remodeled the kitchen within the existing footprint. This time, the focus shifted toward transforming the kitchen and living spaces into an open-concept great room designed for gathering, connection, and flexibility. By removing walls, opening the floor plan, and introducing stacking glass doors, we created a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience that extends directly onto the new deck while filling the home with natural light.

Throughout the remodel, we layered rich color and texture into the interiors while thoughtfully balancing updated design elements with treasured family heirlooms, inherited artwork, and well-traveled accessories collected over the years. These meaningful pieces brought warmth, history, and personality into the home, making the spaces feel deeply personal and impossible to replicate.

The kitchen remodel became one of the defining features of the project. Blue kitchen cabinetry paired with a chevron backsplash tile introduced a playful yet timeless layer of color and pattern, while existing oak wood floors and the original brick fireplace surround helped preserve the character of the home. The result is a California-inspired interior that feels collected, layered, and lived in rather than overly designed.

This renovation ultimately touched nearly every area of the house, though the connection between the great room and outdoor living spaces became the true centerpiece of the transformation. The expansive layout now allows the family to rearrange furnishings easily, creating spaces that adapt naturally to entertaining, relaxing, working, and everyday life.

One of our favorite aspects of this Long Beach remodel was finding ways to honor the home’s original character while introducing a fresh design direction. By blending existing architectural elements with updated materials, layered color, and thoughtful functionality, we created a family home that feels timeless, welcoming, and deeply reflective of the people who live there.
